The Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik armoured attack aircraft became an icon of Soviet resistance on the Eastern Front in the Second World War. Known throughout the Wehrmacht as the Fleischer ( Butcher ), the Il-2 took a terrible toll on German infantry and armoured vehicles including tanks and assault guns and when equipped with a rear gunner, German bombers and even the occasional fighter were among its victims. However, the cost was also great; during the early stages of the war, Il-2 pilots were not expected to survive more than an average of five or six sorties. The Il-2 Shturmovik was designed as a low-level close-support aircraft capable of penetrating enemy armour and destroying ground targets. Dubbed the Flying Tank by Soviet air crews, it was engineered to withstand tremendous punishment and still drop its payload and return to base; Luftwaffe pilots were often amazed to see 20-mm cannon shells bouncing off its armoured plates. At its peak, production of the Il-2 reached 900 aircraft per month, and by the end of the war over 36,000 had been built. It became a renowned symbol of Soviet resilience and was undoubtedly the most important aircraft of the Red Air Force in the Second World War. This book is as the author describes a decent balance for modelers and "historians". The color plates and general history of the aircraft are a real treat. However, as a "history" with a bent towards the "technical" kinda' reader, I was really let down by the lack of technical descriptions in the type of detail that I prefer.Even with the with weakness this book has terms of my reading preferences I will buy the two other volumes Mr. Moore has authored while I continue to purchase additional books on the IL-2.
(Mr. Moore does conveniently provide a list of additional IL-2 titles.)
If you have a general interest the IL-2 or need some color schemes, this book is a worthy purchase.
Edit: 2/25/17, the best possible thing I can say about this book is that I have now purchased every book published by Mr. Moore

Great book, strong research with fantastic pictures and profiles. A must have for any fan of the Shturmovik
A well done look at one of the most important planes of WWII, oft overlooked by the West. Very detailed research is presented which will be of interest to history buffs and especially to any modeler wanting to build a model of the Il-2.
This recently released (2015) book covers nearly every aspect of the Il-2 in great detail, from technical detail,service history and pilot interviews to info on scale models of the Shturmovik and Il-2 depiction in games, movies, apparel and further Il-2 reading. All this is bound by excellent color painting schemes and a plethora of rare/unpublished photos. This book covers pre-production development, active service history of the single seater, two seater and two seater arrow, production stats, foreign service, pilot interviews and info on surviving Il-2's. Next is techincal details and evolution of the Il-2, along with counterparts to the Il-2 and a short section on the Il-10. Finally, the legacy of the Il-2 is covered in Il-2 production and losses, estimated German losses to the Il-2, notable pilots and an excellent and detailed report of Il-2 depiction in popular culture and reviews of Il-2 plastic models. The end covers internet resources, further Il-2 reading, bibliography and index.
Out of all the aircraft/tank books I have read so far, this is by far the best. The $45 price tag is well worth it.
